Phase 1 Update: Backfilling Begins in Kamulu
The first trucks have arrived on-site. After months of planning, Phase 1 — Site Preparation — is now visibly underway: clean fill dirt is being brought in to backfill and level the low-lying, waterlogged sections of the five-acre property before any planting begins.
Why backfilling comes first
Much of the land sits low relative to the river and floods badly in the rainy season. Before a single tree can go into the ground with confidence, the site needs a stable, well-graded base. That means bringing in fill material, spreading and compacting it in stages, and re-checking drainage across the property as the levels change.
This is unglamorous work, and it will take time. But it is the literal foundation for everything that follows — the bamboo corridor, the Miyawaki forest, the food forest layers. We're documenting it because it's real, and because founding partners deserve to see the ground-level truth of Phase 1, not just the finished vision.
